In this online seminar from 2023 led by Leah Roe, founder of The Perk, leaders embarked on an exploratory journey into the heart of self-trust. With her vibrant energy & a mission to build the world's best leaders, Leah shared her unique approach to leadership & culture development.

The session wasn't just about absorbing wisdom; it was an interactive experience designed to foster connection, curiosity, & growth.

Leah set the stage for an environment where openness & vulnerability are not just welcomed but encouraged. This laid the groundwork for the deeper exploration of self-trust.

1. What is Self-Trust?

Self-trust is the confidence & hope one maintains in themselves & their abilities, regardless of the circumstances. It's about believing in your capacity to navigate life's ups & downs, to ask for help without feeling inadequate, & to see the unseen benefit in failures. Leah emphasized that self-trust is like the roots of a tree, invisible yet fundamental to our growth & stability.

Through key exercises & activities, leaders can assess their self-trust levels & consider how self-trust impacts their lives. By sharing personal stories & encouraging leaders to share theirs, Leah illustrated the transformative power of trusting oneself.

2. The Five Behaviors to Build Self-Trust

There are five core behaviors essential for cultivating self-trust: Connect, Create Safety, Commit, Be Clear, & Celebrate. These behaviors, like confetti, each play a unique role in strengthening the foundation of self-trust.

Connect: Knowing oneself deeply is the first step toward self-trust. Leah encouraged curiosity about one's thoughts, feelings, & desires as a pathway to connection.

  • Trust-Building Tip #1: Get Curious. Engage in self-reflection to understand your desires, values, & goals.

  • Trust-Building Tip #2: Listen to Yourself. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Allow yourself the space to explore what you genuinely want and how you feel about your experiences.

Create Safety: This involves cultivating a non-judgmental space for oneself to learn & grow from mistakes, rather than being harshly self-critical.

  • Trust-Building Tip #3: Hold a Non-Judgmental Space. Cultivate a forgiving attitude towards yourself when mistakes are made. Learn from these experiences instead of berating yourself.

  • Trust-Building Tip #4: Mindset Management. Be mindful of the internal dialogue. Shift from a critical to a supportive tone in your self-talk.

Commit: Reliability & follow-through on promises to oneself are crucial. Leah stressed the importance of realistic commitments & the power of a high "say-do ratio."

  • Trust-Building Tip #5: Follow Through. Ensure that you are reliable to yourself by honoring the commitments you make.

  • Trust-Building Tip #6: Realistic Expectations. Set achievable goals & expectations for yourself to prevent disappointment and disillusionment.

Be Clear: Understanding & communicating your wants, needs, & boundaries clearly to others is essential for maintaining trust in oneself.

  • Trust-Building Tip #7: Define Your Desires & Boundaries. Know & articulate what you want & don’t want, both to yourself & others.

  • Trust-Building Tip #8: Consistent Communication. Clearly communicate your needs, boundaries, & expectations to those around you, ensuring they understand & respect your standpoint.

Celebrate: Acknowledging & celebrating one's achievements & qualities fosters a positive self-relationship & reinforces self-trust.

  • Trust-Building Tip #9: Acknowledge Progress and Wins. Recognize not only the major achievements but also the small steps & progress you make towards your goals.

  • Trust-Building Tip #10: Personalized Celebration. Celebrate your successes in ways that are meaningful & enjoyable to you.

Leah's message was clear: self-trust is not a static trait but a dynamic quality that we can develop & strengthen over time. It's about making deliberate choices that align with our true selves & embracing the journey with compassion and courage.

3. The Impact of Self-Trust on Leadership

Self-trust is not just a personal asset, either. It's a critical leadership skill. Trusting oneself inspires confidence, fosters creativity, & empowers risk-taking, leading to innovation & growth. It enables leaders to be more authentic, resilient, & emotionally intelligent, qualities that are contagious & can transform the culture of entire organizations.

4. Bonus Mindset Builders

When leaders use the five trust-building behaviors above, they can nurture their own self-trust &, by extension, their leadership capabilities.

  • Self-Assessment: Regularly assess where you stand in terms of self-trust & identify areas for improvement.

  • Journaling: Use journaling as a tool for reflection, to track your progress, & to dialogue with yourself about your thoughts, feelings, & actions.

  • Action Planning: Set specific, actionable goals for yourself based on the insights gained from the online seminar & your reflections. Make a plan to incorporate these behaviors into your daily or weekly routines.

  • Seek Feedback & Support: Engage with peers, mentors, or coaches who can provide feedback & support as you work on building self-trust.

By integrating these actionable steps into their lives, leaders can work towards filling their "self-trust confetti jar," a metaphor for gradually building a solid foundation of self-trust through consistent practice & reflection. This process not only enhances personal growth but also empowers individuals to become more effective, authentic leaders.

In a world where self-doubt & external pressures can easily sway our paths, this is a powerful reminder of the strength that lies within each of us. Cultivating self-trust is not just about personal fulfillment; it's about unlocking our potential to lead, inspire, & make a meaningful impact in the world.
